Few weeks before, a fake video titled “Candid Camera Prank [HQ]” and messages which said “this is without doubt the sexiest video ever! :P :P :P ” were doing the rounds in facebook. Many users were bombarded with such messages on their wall or friend’s profiles. The post is accompanied by a picture which appears as a movie thumbnail picture of a woman with a short skirt on an exercise bicycle.

When you click on the video, Facebook user will be required to allow the application the permission to access user’s public information, post to user’s wall, and access to user data any time. Once permission is granted, a “Thanks for the confirmation! You can continue to the video now” message is display. However, when user clicks on Continue button to view the video, user is prompted to update the out-of-date FLV player.

User is then instructed to download and install a file named VLCsetup.exe. This VLC setp file is ofcourse fake which attempts to fool user to believe that it’s installing VLC (VideoLAN) player and it infects your PC with a malware or adware called Hotbar.

Here’s a video demo by WebSense on what’s happening when users click on the Sexiest Video Ever link.

Those who see the “Sexiest Video Ever” video on their facebook walls, do not click on the links or allow the Facebook application to run.
For users who have installed the Hotbar, most anti-virus software can remove and clean the Hotbar. Just scan the computer with up-to-date anti-virus. The Hotbar may add an entry in Add and Remove Programs or Programs and Features of Control Panel, Uninstall that. In addition, it’s also recommended to change the password for Facebook.

Those who use Facebook know that to view someone’s profile, he/she has to be in your friend list. By default you cannot view a user who is not in your friend list, unless ofcourse if they change their sharing settings accordingly. If you try to view their profile you will get a message saying “XYZ only shares some of his profile information with everyone”. This also means that you cannot see their private photos and albums. Well…that’s not true anymore.

Almost a month ago a javascript was discovered that allows anyone to view anyone’s private photos and album without being their friend. All they have to do is go to the user profile page and paste the following javascript below at the address bar.

javascript:(function( {CSS.removeClass(document.body,%20′profile_two_columns’); tab_controller.changePage(“photos”);})()

This hack might not always work and you may will get an error message saying “There are no photos to display. Photos of XYZ may not have been tagged, or may not be visible due to privacy.” This happens especially when the user already has set the setting to allow “EVERYONE” to view photos & videos of the user or has no photos & videos uploaded at all.

This method may not last  long as once the concerned authorities comes to know about it, they will soon try to rectify it. Anyways you can try this method while it lasts.

Fortunately for those who are concerned about their privacy being intruded, there’s a way to get through this. You can configure a stricter privacy setting for your Facebook profile. It will be shown in my next post tomorrow. So keep reading.

All those who use Mozilla Firefox must have noticed that when you scroll down a relatively long webpage, it scrolls with the same speed throughout the page. For those of you who wish to acclereate the scroll speed of their web browser here’s a way do it. With this small change, users can change and try various values in order to satisfy their own most preferred speed setting.
In the new Firefox 3.6 browser, the developer had actually added an important feature namely Scroll Acceleration in the browser to assist users who might have wanted to speed up their page scrolling rate. However, this feature was later removed by the developer and postponed to the newer version release as it could conflict with some mouse drivers and encounter problems such as double acceleration.

But for users who would like to try the acceleration feature and enable it to increase the page scrolling speed in Firefox, users can activate and turn it on easily. To enable this secret feature, users just need to do some simple setting following the steps below:

  • Type in about:config in the address box of your firefox web browser.
  • Search for mousewheel.acceleration.start via the filter box.
  • Users can set their preferred number of successive mouse scrolls to accelerate the page scrolling speed
  • After that go to mousewheel.acceleration.factor to change value and set to how many times faster users want to scroll.

With this small adjustments, users will be able to change the page scrolling speed and enhance their browsing experience.

Today i’ll like to share a hack google for more effective and precise search result. Its an old trick but not many are aware of this. Well as we know, we get all kinds of stuff using Google’s search engine, but why waste time when you know exactly what you want.
For eg. Music is something we all want to download for free. If you properly query google, you can find open indexes of music files easily. use these open indexes to get your free music. just type in the following command into the google text box.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” “hips don’t lie” mp3

Well, what does this mean??? To simplify… The -inurl htm and -inurl html is trying to get rid of regular webpages and show only index pages. Looking for “index of” in the title is doing the same. The mp3 tag on the end tells google to look for mp3s in these open directories. You can change this to wma, ogg or whatever you want.
You can add additional search criteria to focus your search more.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” mp3 “shakira”

This command will find open directories with mp3 files with shakira. You can change to whaever you want.

Similarly to search for an ebook just type

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” +(”/ebooks”|”/book”) +(chm|pdf|zip)

By using the ( | ) sign, we tell google to look for that OR this .i.e look for ebook or book directories. After that we have listed several common ebook formats (zip, pdf, chf).

This way we can use certain command to make google focus on the searches more to our meet our specifiacations. More such tricks will be posted soon. So keep reading….
