All those who use Mozilla Firefox must have noticed that when you scroll down a relatively long webpage, it scrolls with the same speed throughout the page. For those of you who wish to acclereate the scroll speed of their web browser here’s a way do it. With this small change, users can change and try various values in order to satisfy their own most preferred speed setting.
In the new Firefox 3.6 browser, the developer had actually added an important feature namely Scroll Acceleration in the browser to assist users who might have wanted to speed up their page scrolling rate. However, this feature was later removed by the developer and postponed to the newer version release as it could conflict with some mouse drivers and encounter problems such as double acceleration.

But for users who would like to try the acceleration feature and enable it to increase the page scrolling speed in Firefox, users can activate and turn it on easily. To enable this secret feature, users just need to do some simple setting following the steps below:

  • Type in about:config in the address box of your firefox web browser.
  • Search for mousewheel.acceleration.start via the filter box.
  • Users can set their preferred number of successive mouse scrolls to accelerate the page scrolling speed
  • After that go to mousewheel.acceleration.factor to change value and set to how many times faster users want to scroll.

With this small adjustments, users will be able to change the page scrolling speed and enhance their browsing experience.

Today I’d like to share a very small utility called Desktop Media that any average PC user will find useful.
Every time we insert a USB or any other flash drive to the PC, to access it we have to first click on My Computer, search for that particular drive and then click on it. This might sometimes turn out to be tedious and troublesome when we are in hurry or have some important work to be done.
Using Desktop Media you can directly access the contents of the USB device. Desktop Media automatically creates a shortcut icon onto the desktop every time a USB is connected to the PC. By clicking on it you can directly access the USB the same way you otherwise would. Also, if you connect more than one USB, it will list all of them on the desktop. This can save your time which becomes precious when your in a hurry. Desktop Media occupies only 354KB and once you install it there’s nothing else to be done. So hope you all find this useful.

Block Unwanted E-mails in Gmail…

Recently one of my friend encountered a problem with someone sending her unsolicited emails. I’m sure many others like her must have also encountered such problems in the past. It happens that you gave your e-mail ID to that person before or someone gets hold of it from somewhere  and they sent you “bad” emails. Well, if you are a Gmail user there is a way to get through this. While Gmail doesn’t provide any direct feature to block such emails (other than spam of course) you can avoid these troublesome emails by following these steps. It’s not something new but not many people are aware of this method.

1. Go to Gmail and login to your account.

2. Go to an email from the sender you wish to block, and open it.

3. Go to the top of the email and use the More actions dropdown to select Filter messages like these.

4. The sender’s email address will appear in the From textbook of the Create a Filter form.

5. Click the Next Step button.

6. Check the Delete it checkbox.

7. If you wish to apply the new filter to clean out existing messages from this user, check the Also apply filter to # conversations below checkbox. If not, leave it unchecked.

8. Click the Create Filter button.

That’s it. You won’t receive any messages from this sender again.

Today i’ll like to share a hack google for more effective and precise search result. Its an old trick but not many are aware of this. Well as we know, we get all kinds of stuff using Google’s search engine, but why waste time when you know exactly what you want.
For eg. Music is something we all want to download for free. If you properly query google, you can find open indexes of music files easily. use these open indexes to get your free music. just type in the following command into the google text box.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” “hips don’t lie” mp3

Well, what does this mean??? To simplify… The -inurl htm and -inurl html is trying to get rid of regular webpages and show only index pages. Looking for “index of” in the title is doing the same. The mp3 tag on the end tells google to look for mp3s in these open directories. You can change this to wma, ogg or whatever you want.
You can add additional search criteria to focus your search more.

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” mp3 “shakira”

This command will find open directories with mp3 files with shakira. You can change to whaever you want.

Similarly to search for an ebook just type

-inurl:htm -inurl:html intitle:”index of” +(”/ebooks”|”/book”) +(chm|pdf|zip)

By using the ( | ) sign, we tell google to look for that OR this .i.e look for ebook or book directories. After that we have listed several common ebook formats (zip, pdf, chf).

This way we can use certain command to make google focus on the searches more to our meet our specifiacations. More such tricks will be posted soon. So keep reading….

Starting from Tuesday, 9th Feb, most Gmail users where suprised to see their  accounts opening to a new page showcasing Google’s latest product…BUZZ  (Some were even worried their account were hacked and redirected to some other page!!)

So what’s the buzz about BUZZ???
Buzz is an attemp by Google to make Gmail more social by following the twitter and facebook way.

  • Buzz chooses the people whom you contact often from your Gmail and add them as your followers or as the people you follow. It will also connect with your Flickr, Picasa, Google Reader and Twitter accounts and integrate them all directly to your Gmail . You can also access buzz seperately from buzz.google.com
  • It has public and private sharing where each buzz can be set private or public.
  • It has Gmail integration not only for the fact that it’s in Gmail, but Buzz updates appear in your inbox if someone comments on your posts.
  • “Recommended Buzz” recommends content from friends-of-your-friends in your stream, if you accept it. Recommendations “learn” over time based on your feedback.

It also has something for the mobile age. The mobile form of Google Buzz includes:

  • A new mobile Google homepage with automatic updates about your current location
  • A web app for the iPhone and Android;
  • A new version of Google Maps with tight Buzz integration.

Interesting is also a feature where you can see Buzz posts from those near you, even though they have not been recommended or followed.

But not everything about buzz seems so nice...

  • Buzz automatically chooses the people whom you contact often from you Gmail and add them as your followers or as people you follow. This information is available to public, anyone who visits your Buzz profile can see the your follow/followers lists. Which implies that your email contact list becomes public.
  • People who try out buzz out of curiosity without looking into the configurations and settings will have their followers/follow list configured automatically. And worse, Buzz continues to add followers/follow list as we use it.
  • Other things like chat status message, pictures, videos etc can also be displayed without your consent

So before actually using it, make sure you configure  your settings according to your preferences. Btw, you can turn off Buzz by clicking on the link which is there in the bottom of the Gmail page.

Watch this video…

It’s been really long time since I’d written my last post. Finally I managed to write something that I’ve been wanting to share from a long time. My previous article was about changing the progress box to that of Windows 7. That article got good comments. This article is something similar to it, so I’m sure it will be intresting.

Windows 7, similar to Vista, doesn’t have any Shutdown/Log Off dialog box like what we have in Windows XP but we can redesign Windows XP default shutdown box to make it look more refreshing like a Windows 7 Shutdown/Log Off dialog box.

Windows XP

Windows 7

To do so,
1) You will need Resource Hacker.

2)A few BMP files will be needed to change the appearance of both Shutdown/Log Off dialog box.
Click here to download BMP files.

3)Extract the file and you’ll get 4 BMPs with the name:
1.bmp

2.bmp

3.bmp

4.bmp

4) Now open “%windir%\System32\Shell32.dll” file in Resource Hacker and then replace following BITMAPs with the mentioned BMP files:

Bitmap -> 14351 -> 1033 with 1.bmp

Bitmap -> 14353 -> 1033 with 2.bmp

Bitmap -> 14354 -> 1033 with 1.bmp

Bitmap -> 14355 -> 1033 with 2.bmp

Bitmap -> 14356 -> 1033 with 3.bmp

5) Now save the file and open %windir%\System32\msgina.dll file in Resource Hacker and then replace following BITMAPs with the mentioned BMP files:

Bitmap -> 20140 -> 1033 with 1.bmp

Bitmap -> 20141 -> 1033 with 2.bmp

Bitmap -> 20142 -> 1033 with 1.bmp

Bitmap -> 20143 -> 1033 with 2.bmp

Bitmap -> 20150 -> 1033 with 4.bmp

Now save the file. That’s it.

6) Now replace the existing shell32.dll and msgina.dll file with the newly created ones. No need to restart.
